Stained Glass of Percy Bacon & Brothers
Posted 06 August 2025.
Another example of a variation in design from the studio of Percy Bacon and Brothers. The glass is predominantly white with details rendered in silver stain, the figures being brought out by the use of a deep red background. This painting technique was used at St Mary's, Tarrant Hinton, Dorset in a window of 1909, and may be by the same hand.
The window is signed bottom right; PERCY BACON BROS.

There is another Percy Bacon window at All Hallows in the west porch. The subject is the Blessed Virgin Mary and Child. The date of insertion is unknown, but this window is more in keeping with the Percy Bacon style. Similar figurative designs were executed for St Leonard's, Rockingham, Northamptonshire (NA2 centre light), and nearby St Peter's, Bexhill, East Sussex (SA3 left light), amongst others.
The figures are in their traditional poses. Above them an angel holds a bejewelled cloth or rug as a back-drop. Around the figures a scroll reads; "Ecce virgo concipiet et pariet filium" - "Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son". At the base of the window, another scroll reads; "Verbum caro factum est" - "The Word became flesh".
The window is unsigned.
