Stained Glass of Percy Bacon Limited
Posted 20 February 2026.
St Nicholas is a small, secluded church, with a c12 round tower with a c19 octagonal top. Mostly c14. Aside from some reset medieval fragments, this two-light window is the only one in St Nicholas's filled with stained glass. A faculty was granted for the insertion of the window in 1925. The window is dedicated to the Rev John Riley Mee who lived in the nearby Brandiston Hall.
The window depicts the standing figures of St John the Evangelist and St Nicholas, each holding their symbols; St John - a chalice in his left hand while blessing with his right, and St Nicholas as Bishop holding a model of a sailing boat in his left hand and a crozier in his right. Although St Nicholas a popular subject in Eastern Orthodox iconography where he is often portrayed wearing an omniphorion and the eastern style of mitre, here he is dressed as a western bishop. The format of the window follows Bacon's usual style, with the figures standing in elaborate architectonic niches and in front of drapes tied to the columns with golden bows. The dedication reads:
The window is signed PERCY BACON LONDON.
