On Low Side Windows

Low Side Windows in English Pre-Reformation Churches: Some Examples.
11

C: Modified openings: A pre-existing chancel window in a suitable location, but too high to function as a confessional.

In this category of low side window a pre-existing window is close to the western end of the chancel, but would have been too high to have functioned as a confessional window. These were modified by creating a low opening below one, or all of the lights of the original window, its sill being used as the lintel of the new opening, or by the addition of a transom. Internally the splay of the original window would be lowered across its whole width (e.g. St Bartholomew's Church Furtho, Northamptonshire, St Mary Magdalene, Wardington, Oxfordshire) or just under one of the lights-invariably the westernmost-(e.g. Holy Trinity Scoulton Norfolk, All Saints, Ladbroke, Warwickshire). This category of low side window was described by F. T. S. Houghton in his survey of Warwickshire churches as "low silled, not transomed", or "low silled, transomed". However, this seems to be an unnecessary complication.

North side of chancel. The low side window has been formed below the westernmost light of a two-light lancet pair which is close enough to the western end of the chancel to occupy the traditional position for confession to be heard, but too high. The westernmost lancet has been lowered and its former lintel now acts as a transom.

This photo of the south side window shows how the original internal splay has been lowered, but retaining a lip, or shoulder on both sides which would have supported the jams and sill of the original window while the opening was created. Note the rebate for shutters and hinge brackets on both sides (the lower one on the western light is missing).
